Heraclius, the son of an ex-consul, was made a general by Phocas. After his father was executed by Phocas, he and his mother, who was of Persian descent, fled to Constantinople, where he raised an army and was proclaimed emperor in 610. He defeated Phocas in battle and assumed the throne.
