Pope John VIII approved Photios’s reinstatement after Ignatius died. This was done in order to bring peace between the Eastern and Western churches. Photios had been excommunicated by the pope in 867, but after Ignatius died in 877, John VIII decided to reinstate Photios in order to maintain peace.
