Friend. Pliny the Elder was a close friend and advisor to the Roman emperor Vespasian. He served as Vespasian's procurator in Hispania Tarraconensis and later as his prefect of the fleet at Misenum. Pliny was also a prolific writer and naturalist, and his works include the Natural History, a vast encyclopedia of knowledge on the natural world.
