Stabiae was the town near which Pliny the Elder died. He was a Roman author and naturalist who perished during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pliny was stationed in Misenum, a naval base across the Bay of Naples from Vesuvius, when he witnessed the eruption and decided to investigate. He sailed to Stabiae, where he attempted to rescue his friend Rectina from her villa.
