Prince Louis Rwagasore, the leader of the Union for National Progress (UPRONA) party, was assassinated on 13 October 1961. He was a popular politician who had campaigned for independence from Belgium. The assassination is believed to have been carried out by supporters of the Tutsi monarchy.
