Pulcheria was born on 19 January 398 or 399 in Constantinople, the daughter of Emperor Arcadius and Empress Aelia Eudoxia. She was the older sister of Theodosius II, and she became the sole empress of the Eastern Roman Empire in 414 after her brother's death. Pulcheria was a devout Christian, and she was known for her charity and her support of the arts.
