When did Theodosius II die, influencing Pulcheria's marriage to Marcian?

  • 26 July 450

  • 15 August 451

  • 1 January 452

  • 25 December 453

Answer

Theodosius II died on 26 July 450. Pulcheria was his sister and, according to Byzantine law, she was the next in line to succeed him. However, Pulcheria had taken vows as a nun and did not want to become emperor. She therefore agreed to marry Marcian, a general in the Byzantine army, who was proclaimed emperor in her place.
