Pulcheria was the elder sister of the Roman emperor Theodosius II. In November 450, she married Emperor Marcian. The marriage was intended to strengthen the bond between the two Roman empires, the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire. Pulcheria was a powerful figure in the Eastern Roman Empire, and her marriage to Marcian gave her even more power.
