Don Brash succeeded Bill English as National Party leader in 2003. Brash, an economist and former Reserve Bank Governor, was seen as a strong and experienced candidate. He led the National Party into the 2005 general election, but was defeated by the incumbent Labour Party led by Helen Clark.
