State terrorism was a hallmark of the regime of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). Trujillo and his associates ruled the Dominican Republic with an iron fist, using violence and intimidation to crush all opposition. Thousands of Dominicans were killed or imprisoned during the Trujillo regime, and many more were forced to flee the country.
