Rafael Trujillo was born on October 24, 1891, in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. He was the son of a wealthy landowner and a former slave. Trujillo attended a military academy in the Dominican Republic and then served in the Dominican Army. In 1916, the United States invaded the Dominican Republic and occupied the country until 1924.
