At the age of 59, Rauf Denktaş, Then-leader of the Turkish Cypriot community in Cyprus, made a unilateral declaration of independence for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on 15th November 1983. This proclamation effectively established a de facto state in the northern part of the island, which has been recognized only by Turkey.
