Manuel Contreras was Raúl Iturriaga's superior at DINA, a Chilean security agency. He served as director of DINA from 1972 to 1977. Contreras was a key figure in the Chilean military dictatorship, and he is believed to be responsible for the deaths of thousands of people. He was convicted of human rights abuses in 2001 and sentenced to 70 years in prison. He died in prison in 2015.
