Renato Augusto did come through the youth academy of a Brazilian club, Corinthians, where he played from 2002 to 2008. He then had stints with Bayer Leverkusen, Werder Bremen, and Beijing Guoan before returning to Corinthians in 2016. He has also represented Brazil at the international level, appearing at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
