Robert reigned as the Duke of Normandy from 1087 to 1106. He was the second son of William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. Robert was a skilled warrior and a popular leader, but he was also known for his impulsiveness and his love of hunting. Robert was defeated by Henry I of England at the Battle of Tinchebrai in 1106 and died in captivity shortly afterwards.
