Who did Robert II succeed as the Duke of Normandy?

  • Robert I

  • William the Conqueror

  • Richard I

  • Henry II

Answer

Robert II succeeded his father William the Conqueror as Duke of Normandy in 1035. Robert was a younger son of William, and was not originally expected to inherit the duchy. However, his elder brother, Richard III, died in 1027, and Robert's other brother, William Rufus, was killed in a hunting accident in 1035. Robert was thus the only surviving son of William the Conqueror, and became duke.
