Robert Smalls was a South Carolina politician who also served as a Confederate States Navy pilot. He was born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina in 1839. In 1862, Smalls and seven other slaves took over the Confederate ship CSS Planter and sailed it to Union lines. Smalls was rewarded for his actions by being commissioned as a captain in the Union Navy.
