Robert Smalls was a former slave who became a successful businessman and politician in the Reconstruction era. He founded the Republican Party of South Carolina in 1867. The party was committed to promoting the rights of African Americans and helping them to integrate into society. Smalls served as a delegate to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention in 1868 and was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1875.
