Known as "The Old Pretender", James Francis Edward Stuart was the son of King James II of England and VII of Scotland. Following the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which saw the Protestant William and Mary assume the throne, James was raised as a staunch Roman Catholic and asserted his claim to the British throne, sparking two unsuccessful Jacobite uprisings in 1715 and 1745.
