Rudolf Höss served twice as commandant of Auschwitz. He was appointed to the post in May 1940 and served until November 1943, when he was replaced by Arthur Liebehenschel. Höss was then appointed commandant of the new camp at Majdanek, but he returned to Auschwitz in May 1944. He remained in that post until the camp was liberated by the Red Army in January 1945.
