In the mid-1930s, Peierls helped to develop the Frisch-Peierls memorandum, the first scientific paper that outlined the possibility of building an atomic bomb. He played a leading role in the British atomic bomb programme, Tube Alloys, from its inception in 1940 until he moved to the United States in 1943 to work on the Manhattan Project.
