Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas was born in Mecca, and at the age of seventeen he embraced Islam. He was one of the first people to do so, and he played a major role in the early history of the religion. He fought in many battles, including the Battle of Badr, and he was a close companion of the prophet Muhammad.
