Sacagawea helped establish cultural contacts with Native American people through her ability to speak their languages. She spoke the Hidatsa language, as well as the Shoshone and Mandan languages. This ability allowed her to serve as an interpreter for the Lewis and Clark expedition, which traveled through the territory of many different Native American tribes.
