SPAS-1 (Shuttle Pallet Satellite-1) was the first satellite deployed using the robotic arm by Sally Ride. It was a free-flying platform that carried a variety of experiments, including a spectrometer to study the Earth's atmosphere and an X-ray telescope to observe the sun. SPAS-1 was deployed from the Space Shuttle Challenger during the STS-7 mission in 1983.
