The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), signed in 2005, granted South Sudan autonomy within Sudan. The agreement ended a two-decade civil war between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A), which fought for independence for the southern region. The CPA provided for a six-year interim period of autonomy, followed by a referendum on independence, which South Sudan voted for in 2011.
