John Garang, the leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, died in a helicopter crash in 2005. Garang had been instrumental in negotiating the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended the Second Sudanese Civil War. His death was a major setback to the peace process, but the agreement was eventually implemented and led to the independence of South Sudan in 2011.
