John Garang, the First Vice President of Sudan, passed away in 2005. Salva Kiir Mayardit succeeded him in this role. Kiir went on to become the First Vice President of the semi-autonomous region of Southern Sudan in 2005 and its President in 2005. He became the President of South Sudan when it gained independence in 2011.
