Samuel Griffith was born in England but moved to Australia at age eight with his family from Wales. He became a barrister, politician and legal theorist, and served as the first Prime Minister of Queensland from 1883 to 1890. He was also a leading figure in the Australian federation movement, and served as the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia from 1903 to 1919.
