Bhindranwale gained significant attention in the 1978 Sikh-Nirankari clash in which he was involved. This clash began when Nirankaris led a procession through Amritsar's Golden Temple complex, which is sacred to Sikhs. Bhindranwale and other Sikhs believed that this procession was an insult to Sikhism and they tried to stop it. In the ensuing violence, more than 100 people were killed.
