Pertinax reigned before Severus. He was an emperor of the Roman Empire who ruled for three months in 193 AD. He was a respected senator who was chosen by the Praetorian Guard to succeed Commodus. However, he was murdered by the same guards only three months later. Severus was then chosen to succeed him.
