Lucius Septimius Severus was born in Leptis Magna, a city in the Roman Province of Africa. He was the son of a wealthy landowner and he received a good education. Severus joined the Roman army and he quickly rose through the ranks. He became governor of several provinces and he eventually became emperor. Severus ruled the Roman Empire from 193 to 211.
