Sergei Korolev was born in 1907 in Zhytomyr, Russian Empire. He was a Soviet rocket scientist and engineer and is considered the "Father of the Soviet Space Program". He was the chief designer of the Soviet space program and led the development of the Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth.
