Shapur I, the second king of the Sasanian Empire of Persia, reigned from 240 to 270 AD. He is renowned as one of the greatest and most powerful rulers in Iranian history. Shapur I expanded the empire's territories through military conquests, notably defeating the Roman emperor Valerian in 260 AD, capturing him and keeping him as a prisoner until his death.
