Sigismund I the Old, the first king of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, died on 1 April 1548. He was born in 1467 and was the son of Casimir IV Jagiellon and Elizabeth of Austria. Sigismund I was elected king of Poland in 1506 and was crowned in 1507. He also became grand duke of Lithuania in 1506. Sigismund I was a successful ruler and oversaw the expansion of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
