Simeon I was the first Bulgarian ruler to assume the title of Emperor or Tsar. This title was typically reserved for the rulers of the Roman Empire, and Simeon's assumption of it was a sign of his ambition and his desire to expand his empire. He did indeed expand his empire, conquering much of the Balkans and even briefly invading the Byzantine Empire itself.
