Sirimavo Bandaranaike was allowed to return as a public figure in 1986. She had been banned from politics since 1980, after her government was overthrown in a military coup. In 1986, she was allowed to return to Sri Lanka and run for president. She was defeated in the election, but she continued to be a prominent political figure until her death in 2000.
