After serving in the Australian Imperial Force, Arthur Brownell joined the Royal Flying Corps. The Royal Flying Corps was the air force of the British Army during World War I. It was formed in 1912 and merged with the Royal Naval Air Service in 1918 to form the Royal Air Force.
