George I was the first British monarch of the House of Hanover, and he ruled from 1714 until his death in 1727. He was the son of Sophia, Electress of Hanover, and Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Sophia was the granddaughter of James I of England, and she was next in line to the British throne after the death of Queen Anne in 1714.
