Raasay is a small island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, located between Skye and the mainland. It has a population of around 1,000 people. Sorley MacLean was born in Raasay in 1911, and spent his childhood there. He was a poet, who wrote in both Gaelic and English. His work often explored themes of Scottish nationalism and identity.
