Stendhal, born Henri Beyle, was a French writer, historian and critic who wrote novels that have been described as psychological realism. His most famous works include The Red and the Black and The Charterhouse of Parma. Stendhal studied law in school, but he did not finish his degree. Instead, he decided to become a writer.
