Marie-Angelique was the mother of French novelist and historian Stendhal. She was born in Grenoble in 1768 and died in 1838. She was a devout Catholic and a supporter of the monarchy. Stendhal was very close to his mother and she had a great influence on his writing. She is mentioned in many of his novels, including "The Red and the Black" and "The Charterhouse of Parma".
