Stepan Bandera was born on 1 January 1909 in Staryi Uhryniv, Austria-Hungary. He was a Ukrainian nationalist, politician, and revolutionary who was the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). He is considered a hero by many Ukrainians, but he is also seen as a controversial figure due to his involvement in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which carried out massacres of Poles and Jews during World War II.
