Stenka Razin's real first name was Stepan. He was a Don Cossack leader who led a major uprising against Tsar Alexis of Russia in 1667. The rebellion began in response to harsh taxes and harsh treatment of the Cossacks by the Tsar. Razin and his men captured several cities and marched on Moscow, but they were defeated by the Tsar's army. Razin was executed in 1671.
