In 1938, John William Strutt was elected to the Tasmanian Legislative Council, representing the electorate of Buckingham. He served in the Council for 18 years, until his death in 1956. During his time in the Council, Strutt was a vocal advocate for the interests of the rural community and for the development of Tasmania's infrastructure. He also played an active role in the formation of the Liberal Party in Tasmania.
