Answer
The first successful ascent of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, was achieved on May 29, 1953, by a team led by British mountaineer John Hunt. The successful summiters included New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a Nepali Sherpa. Hillary and Tenzing reached the summit together and became the first climbers to do so.
