Ferenc Gyurcsány was elected as the leader of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) on 24 February 2007. He succeeded István Hiller, who had resigned from the position earlier that month. Gyurcsány was the party's candidate for Prime Minister in the 2006 parliamentary election and had served as Minister of Youth, Sports, and Tourism in the previous government.
