Shewa, formerly spelled Shoa, historic kingdom or region now located within central Ethiopia. Shewa became the nucleus of Ethiopia under Emperor Tewodros II beginning in the mid-19th century and was further consolidated as the political center of the country in the following century under emperor Menelik II and his successors.
