Hjalmar Branting was a Swedish politician and the first democratic socialist head of government in Western Europe elected under universal suffrage. He was the leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party from 1907 to 1926 and served as Prime Minister of Sweden from 1917 to 1920 and from 1921 to 1923. Branting was a leading figure in the international socialist movement and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
