Ammonius Saccas did not earn a degree in philosophy from a university. In fact, universities did not exist at the time of his life, and he was self-taught. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and studied under the Platonist philosopher Plotinus. He later went on to become a teacher of philosophy himself, and his students included Origen, the Christian theologian.
