Michael VIII Palaiologos was the emperor after George Mouzalon's death. Mouzalon was a military leader who had been appointed emperor by the Byzantine army after the deposition of Alexios V. However, Mouzalon's reign was short-lived, and he was killed by the forces of the deposed emperor. Palaiologos was then proclaimed emperor by the army, and he ruled the Byzantine Empire for the next 28 years.
